The Pingtung Detention Center was established in January of 1950. However, it did not meet the needs of the modern criminal policy due to the increasing quantity of inmates and damaged structure, so the Ministry of Justice had planned to build a new Center which was completed in February of 1994. The new Pingtung Detention Center started to detain inmates on March 2, 1994. The whole area is 7.8 hectares, including 4.1 hectares of the interior of the main building. The maximum capacity is 674 inmates. Because of the practical building, the Pingtung Detention Center's Solar Power Project commenced in June of 2018. The project will generate 263.4KW annually – enough to supply the needs of 100 families a year.
